After 2 months of Outlook 2016 prompting to start in Safe Mode, then crashing (not responding), I tried the simplest thing ever and it worked. Control Panel, Internet Options, Advanced, Reset (and delete). After 2 months of banging my head on my desk, Outlook is stable. Command into it and press Enter.outlook.exe /safe It’ll open Outlook in safe mode. Edit A Desktop Shortcut Right-click on the Outlook shortcut on your desktop and select Properties. Running Outlook with elevated permissions is only recommended to perform the action that requires administrator level permissions. After performing the required action, restart Outlook normally again so you’ll run it in the user-level context again.

Also note that several features and actions are not possible when running Outlook as an administrator. For instance the Search feature will not work.

When starting Outlook as an Administrator, User Account Control will either prompt your for Administrator credentials or will ask you for confirmation to open Outlook with elevated permissions.

Method 1: Keyboard shortcut

A quick way to start any application as an administrator is to hold the CTRL+SHIFT button while launching the application.

  1. Close Outlook.
  2. Hold CTRL+SHIFT while clicking on the Outlook icon that you’d normally click to open Outlook.
  3. Accept the User Account Control (UAC) security prompt and provide administrator credentials when prompted.

Method 2: From the Start Menu

When you normally start Outlook from the Start Menu or have it Pinned to your Start screen, it is also easy to start it as an administrator.

  1. Close Outlook.
  2. Open the Start Menu.
  3. Locate Outlook.
  4. Right click on the Outlook icon.
  5. Expand the “More” menu and choose; Run as administrator.

Method 3: From the Taskbar (quick method)

When you have Outlook located on your Taskbar, starting Outlook as an administrator can be done in the following way;

When you performed a Search for Outlook, starting it as an administrator is possible too.

  1. Close Outlook.
  2. Start your Search in any of the following ways;
    • Open the Start Menu and just type; Outlook
      The Search flyout will open automatically.
    • Click on the Search icon on the Taskbar (if enabled).
    • Type in the Search box on the Taskbar (if enabled).
    • Use the Windows + S keyboard shortcut to open the Search flyout and search for Outlook.
  3. From the Search results, right click on Outlook and choose; Run as administrator.

If you have a shortcut for Outlook on your Desktop or anywhere else, it is very easy to start it as an administrator.

  1. Close Outlook.

This method can be used if you want to offer a dedicated Administrator shortcut to people who do not know how to start Outlook as an administrator.

You only have to prepare this method once. After that, you can directly start Outlook as an administrator by executing the customized shortcut.

  1. Create a Desktop shortcut to Outlook.
  2. Right click on the shortcut and choose: Properties.
  3. On the Shortcut tab, click on the button: Advanced…

I’m having an issue with Outlook and one of the suggestions told me to start Outlook from the Run command with the /safe switch and check something. However, I’m in a corporate environment and the Run command has been disabled for us.

Is there an other way to troubleshoot Outlook or get into Safe Mode or should I call my IT department?

Aside from using the Run command, there are also other ways to start Outlook in Safe Mode.

Method 1: Hold CTRL

When you hold the CTRL button on your keyboard when clicking the Outlook shortcut on your Desktop, Taskbar, Start Menu or Start Screen, Outlook will detect this and asks if you want to start Outlook in Safe Mode.

This method works in all versions of Windows and for all versions of Outlook.

Method 2: Windows 7

If you are using Windows 7, then there is a Search box in the Start Menu. Here type; outlook.exe /safe

Method 3: Windows 8

In Windows 8, the search box will automatically show when you start typing. So simply open the Start Screen and type; outlook.exe /safe

In Windows 10, there is a search box on the Taskbar by default but if you have set to hide this, it will automatically show when you start typing after opening the Start Menu as well. Here type; outlook.exe /safe

Method 5: Create a shortcut

You can also create a new shortcut to outlook.exe and add the /safe switch;

First, determine the location of outlook.exe on your system. In general you’ll find it under;

  • 32-bit version of Windows
    C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficeOffice <version number>
  • 64-bit version of Windows
    C:Program Files (x86)Microsoft OfficeOffice <version number>
  • Microsoft 365 installation or Click-to-Run installation
    C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficerootOffice16

If you can’t find it, do a search for outlook.exe or use OutlookTools (free) instead.

Once you’ve found outlook.exe we create a shortcut to it with the /safe switch to prevent Outlook from opening an extra window each time you click the shortcut or use your keyboard shortcut.

  1. Right click on an empty space on your Desktop and choose New-> Shortcut
  2. Type the path to outlook.exe between quotes or browse to its location via the Browse… button
  3. Type a space behind that and /safe
  4. The entire line should now look like this (example is for a Microsoft 365 installation);
    'C:Program FilesMicrosoft OfficerootOffice16Outlook.exe' /safe
  5. Click Next
  6. Name your shortcut for instance: Outlook Safe Mode
  7. Click Finish
